  Proposal

I need to propose an idea for a media product.  I have chosen to make a magazine about photography as this is my passion and I can share my own knowledge about camera settings to the target audience.  I will make a cover, contents and double page spread as part of this project.  In this document I will explain my ideas and research into the conventions of magazines, marketplace and content.

Magazine name.  I have considered the following ideas for the name of my magazine:

Name ideas: Shutter scene, The art of photography

I will choose Shutter scene because the use of alliteration will make it catchy and memorable, which i believe is very effective. Also, the word Shutter is a common photography term, so immediately communicates to readers that the magazine is related to photography. Finally, the word scene suggests that the magazine covers a variety of subjects before they even open to the contents page. 

Purpose

For my magazine, I have decided to produce a magazine on photography focusing on landscapes, rural areas, architecture and portrait. The purpose of this magazine is to inform and educate hobbyist photographers how to setup and operate their camera and give them inspiration for photo shoots.  I find that I get stuck for ideas when taking photos so this type of content is good material to generate sales amongst communities of photographers.  

Target Audience

The magazine will be targeted at males who are in their late thirty's onwards. I believe that it will be aimed at the explorer as they are adventurous and look for something different. As this a photography magazine it will be aimed at a niche audience so it won't be mainstreamed.

Content

In my photography magazine I will include information on how to use a camera and their functions. For example what aperture would work best for each image. I will also include what is needed to create the image on each page whilst proving information of where the photo as taken, with what settings and if a tripod was needed and if so why. Not only will this provide them with a guide on how to use a camera and seeing the images and how they were taken, it can give them inspiration for their own photos to see things from other peoples views and put it into there views to take photos they might not have thought of. The images that I will use for this project will all be taken by me. As the the main focus is landscapes I will capture different landscapes using a camera to produce good quality images for the magazine you would expect to see.

Resources and personnel

To create this magazine I will use InDesign, an Adobe software. For the equipment I will need a camera as I will have to take all my own photos to put into the magazine. I will also need a computer to upload the photos and create the magazine itself. As  I am the only person working on this magazine I will take on all job roles such as photographer to capture all photos, editor to create the magazine, designer to come up with the theme and look of the magazine and also director as I will need to direct myself and make sure I am managing my time correctly to get the job done.  Also as I am the only one working on this magazine I will also have to make sure that I take on all responsibilities such as making sure everything that is included in the magazine is original image that I have took an there is no-one else's work in it. I also have to make sure that the magazine is suitable for the target audience and follows the guidelines that will be in place.

Distribution

My magazine will be distributed nationally. The basic places where they will be sold are local newsagents and supermarkets such as Sainsburys and Tesco. It will also be sold in camera shops like Jessop's. I was thinking that this magazine should be available digitally as well as physically. Having it digital you can have the magazine linked on your social media. It has many benefits such as it can be easily accessed anywhere. Not only that, it will be environmentally better as their isn't paper going to waste or the plastic wrap magazines tend to come in.
