Events play a big part in a person’s life. It could be a
wedding, a birthday or even a gender reveal. Everyone wants this moment in time capturing so they can look back on it in years to come or to show future generations. Most of the time the client will want the special occasion capturing form different points of view but they
themselves cannot capture it all whilst enjoying the event so that when we are hired, the photographers. We have eyes on the look out to capture all the special moments, the embarrassing moments and those moments that will mean so much to the client now and in years to come so that they can never forget this day, the photos will be like they relive it once more.
I was lucky enough and was asked to capture the
moment at two proms for the same school/college. When I arrived at the venue, I first took a look around to see where would be best to take photos from, what the
lighting was like, and the accessibility was like for me to get through to different places within the place.
I recommend this to everyone who’s shooting an event, as it gives you a good feel for where will be best, so you don’t miss an
opportunity for a photo, as you will already have a rough idea of where you will need to be.
Another thing that is a good idea is to capture the little details of the place as they also tell a story of the night. When I was looking around the venue, I took some setting up shots as they set up ready for the night. I focused on little details such as the ribbons in the chairs and the decorations set on the tables.
Event photography is all about documenting the atmosphere, emotions and interactions that make it memorable. Whether your photographing a wedding or birthday party or prom, like me. I find that the goal is to capture the essence of the
occasion. A great way to show this is through group and natural photos. At the start of prom I stood at the entrance as everyone arrived took posed group photos. Then
throughout the night I persisted on taking group photos when they received achievements, but also when groups were having photos together I would capture them all having one without them realizing to show the natural laughs of them posing for someone else.
Another thing I tried to capture which I would highly recommend is natural photos. As whilst you are capturing the night you want to show off genuine emotions and interactions. These candid photos are a perfect way to tell the story throughout the night. You can show all the laughter, the tears, the hugs and the spontaneous moments that make the night special. When I was at the prom, they had an award ceremony to which I positioned myself in the sidelines where I was able to capture peoples reactions as they received an award and came back to their seats.
These natural photos bring out the true essence of the occasion and allow people to relive that moment from a single photograph. Another tip while shooting an event be prepared for people coming up to you asking for photos, some people may see you and want a good photo taking so you have to take your eyes off the event to take their photo so make sure that you don’t miss anything important in an event, so if possible try set up a part of the night for people who want photos together.
Remember, event photography is about creating memories. So if you are asked to photograph one don’t forget about all the little details that make up the night and the candid photos that make the story. Make sure you capture the spirit of the occasion and the connections between the people and all the joy in their faces. But don't forget what your client has requested off you and make sure to achieve them goals.
